What is sound?
Sound is a form of energy that travels as waves by causing surrounding molecules to vibrate and ripple outward. Sound can travel through air, liquid, and solids. Everything that exists in this universe emits a sound. Not only do we hear sounds, but we also feel and experience sound internally. Sound waves enter into and travel through our cells, tissues, blood, and bones. Certain frequencies have a range of effects on our internal landscape. Humans can generally hear frequencies ranging from 20 - 20,000 Hz. Frequency is a physical quantity of vibrations per second. Something that has a higher frequency also has a high pitch, and similarly, lower frequencies produce a lower pitch. A sound that produces a frequency lower than 20 Hz is called infrasound, anything above 20,000 Hz is called ultrasound.
Many cultures around the world believe in some way that sound is the origin of the universe. Even modern science talks about “The Big Bang,” the moment that vibration created existence. The word universe can also be broken down into two parts - “uni” meaning one, and “verse” meaning song or poem. In yoga, we use the sound of “OM” or “AUM” to represent the one primordial sound from which all universes originated from.
